It’s about Taylor and a person she used to date, and she calls herself Juliet and her boyfriend Romeo in the song to describe the ”us against the world” situation she felt they had. According to Taylor the boy she wrote the song about was ”not a popular choice” and her friends and family couldn’t understand why she was dating him. She first wrote the line ”This love is difficult, but it’s real” and then centered the rest of the song around that. It’s funny how so many people accuse her lyrics of being childlishly simple, and yet most of them can’t even understand what they mean.
